BA Interior and Spatial Design at Chelsea College of Arts allows students to develop skills in conceptualising and designing spatial situations.

With a focus on human scale and material experimentation, student projects include architectural interiors, installations, sensory environments and furniture design. The course prepares students for a variety of careers in the art and design industry.

Course detail

Content: what students can expect

  • A lecture and seminar programme that introduces students to the history, theory and vocabulary of architecture and design. Find out more about previous guest speakers on the BA Interior and Spatial Design blog - baisd.wordpress.com 
  • Learning and teaching to take place in studios, lectures, workshops, group tutorials and optional field trips with teaching staff drawn from both professional practice and academia
  • To explore architecture, computer aided design (CAD), digital applications, exhibition design, fabrication, furniture, installation, interiors, model making, orthographic drawing, situated practice, time-based media, workshop skills and written research
  • To be taught professional practice and construction issues through analysis of buildings by photographic and drawing surveys. Instruction is also given into how briefs for building programmes are assessed, developed and interpreted
  • To be introduced to various professional practice dialogues from conception to realisation through the analysis and research of spaces embodying a global perspective.
  • In year 2 and 3 students work within Design Research Studios. These are research-driven teaching and learning environments consisting of groups of staff and students working closely on a focused agenda framed through individual design briefs. These maximise the potential for peer learning and offer opportunities for cross-level projects, inter-studio critiques and reviews
  • To have access to our suite of digital facilities, including a custom-designed file sharing database and website, wi-fi enabled studios, laser-cutting machinery and a Black Box Media Space that enables students to display audio-visual work and drawings in a digital gallery space
  • To have access to Chelsea's shared workshops including ceramics, casting, laser cutting, photography, metalwork and woodwork. View the Chelsea facilities section

Work experience and opportunities

The college's strong links with the creative industries means our students gain vital commercial experience through a number of live projects. Their professional practice developed through these, participation in external competitions and an evening lecture programme.

Recent course collaborations and projects:

  • Foundling Museum - design of dolls houses for imaginary pupils of the Foundling Hospital
  • Interactive tools for the Courtauld Gallery
  • Participation in World Wilder Lab in Rotterdam  
  • The fit-out of Lifeboat in a Box - a portable lifeboat station
  • Visual Merchandising Awards 2016 - design of a pop-up shop for Oasis
  • William Morris Gallery - an exhibition of a wallpaper sample book

Previously the course has collaborated with Deptford X, Design Museum, Ecobuild, Ford Design, Habitat, Millbank Creative Works, Royal Festival Hall, Royal Horticultural Society, Tate Britain and Victoria & Albert Museum.

The college enjoys positive relationships with many art institutions in Europe and America. Students are encouraged to go on exchanges during their second years. This is to experience different cultures and design practices.

The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) application deadline is 15 January.

Following your UCAS application to this course all home / EU applicants will be invited to choose a date for a selection event. 

What is a selection event?

A selection event is similar to an interview. You will be expected to bring your portfolio, which will be reviewed by course teams. The event will also give you a chance to meet current students, take a tour of the college and see the facilities. 

More details about your selection event will be emailed to you once you have chosen your selection event date.

This course does not accept entry into year 2.

Entry requirements

We select students based on the quality of their applications, looking primarily at their portfolio of work, personal statements and reference.

The standard minimum entry requirements for this course are:

  • A Level - 2 A levels grade C or above
  • or Pass at Foundation Diploma in Art and Design (Level 3 or 4)
  • or Pass, Pass, Pass at BTEC Extended Diploma
  • or Pass at UAL Extended Diploma
  • or Access to Higher Education Diploma
  • or Equivalent EU or non-EU qualifications. For example - International Baccalaureate Diploma pass achieved at 24 points or above
  • and 3 GCSE passes grade C or above

We will also consider other evidence of prior learning and experience via Accreditation of Prior (Experiential) Learning - AP(E)L and / or alternative qualifications assessed as offering the same level as the above requirements.

English language requirements

All classes are taught in English. If English isn't your first language you must provide evidence at enrolment of the following:

Portfolio advice

Portfolios should show the following:

  • Evidence of an ability to develop and explore ideas, particularly of a spatial nature
  • A concise portfolio indicating a critical engagement with design ideas
  • A portfolio mainly made up of drawings, photography, models and sketches, but may include work made in other media, if you feel it’s appropriate to show how you’ve explored ideas

At interview and portfolio review

We look for:

  • A portfolio that shows a critical engagement with design ideas
  • An aptitude for thinking spatially
  • An ability to select and organise work
  • Work that demonstrates a personal agenda
  • Applicants that can communicate an enthusiasm for the subject

Fees and funding

Home / EU fee

£9,250 (2018/19).

Careers and alumni

Recent BA Interior and Spatial Design graduates have found jobs in interior design, architecture, exhibition design, product design, set design for film, theatre and TV as well as interaction design, building conservation, journalism and urban planning.

Some of our alumni go on to postgraduate study, usually within architecture, project management or spatial design. Many apply to Chelsea’s own MA Interior and Spatial Design course.
